Millions of Ukrainians do not want to be bombed, live under imperial rule, or be forced to emigrate; Millions of Russians do not want to be swayed by sanctions or recruited into an invasion that brings them nothing. In our response to the war, we must be careful not to echo the Russian nationalist elites: they believe that blaming NATO will divert attention from their increasingly repressive, kleptocratic and militaristic government at home. Our loyalty must be with the people of Ukraine and Russia, and with the cause of peace.
